PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COURSES IN STEINER EDUCATION

Introductory Information

The University of Canberra is offering two short Professional Learning courses in Steiner Education that are aligned with the new AITSL Professional Learning Standards for Teachers. Together the two courses offer an overview of the main features of Steiner educational philosophy and of the aesthetic and scientific approach that underpins the curriculum.

Designed to benefit both state accredited teachers who are new to Steiner philosophy and experienced Steiner teachers the two short courses offer an opportunity to re-enliven and deepen an understanding of both contemporary and Steiner perspectives on the curriculum, theory of knowledge and human socio-emotional and cognitive development. Teachers undertaking this pathway will have the opportunity to become acquainted with the course content so as to use its structure as a basis for mentoring new teachers.

The course provides an overview of Steiner education which means that it is likely to assist administrators, school board members and others involved in educational leadership in Steiner schools to better understand the unique educational ethos of the communities in which they work. As adult learning models emphasize the importance of group learning and of learning through teaching, the short courses provide a forum for sharing of expertise and an opportunity for discussion and ongoing networking.

The courses can also be used as building blocks towards a Masters Degree in Education or Educational Leadership for those who are interested in further study. Participants who wish to follow this pathway will be able to apply for RPL (recognition of prior learning) of either or both of the short courses. Each will have the equivalent value of one unit of postgraduate study worth 3 credit points respectively.

Two short Professional Learning Courses in Steiner Education:

Steiner Educational Foundations

This short course provides an introduction to the philosophy that underpins the education. The survey includes a dialogue between a “soul-spiritual” educational perspective and recent research findings in physiology and developments in educational psychology in relation to the phases of human development identified in Steiner pedagogy.

Steiner Curriculum Contexts

By encompassing an overview of the main lesson curriculum as practiced in Steiner schools, this short course considers both the original early 20th Century context and contemporary perspectives. The philosophical and Goethean underpinnings of the science and humanity streams in Steiner education are explored as a pathway towards experiential learning that provides a firm foundation for values and moral education.

COURSE DELIVERY

The Professional Learning short courses in Steiner Education are each delivered in five day intensives (during the Easter and Spring vacation respectively) with online learning back up. The e-learning Moodle site provides access to the University of Canberra’s electronic library resources as well as a selection of e-reserve readings which includes articles and chapters chosen specifically for the Steiner units. Other electronic resources include study notes, vod/podcasts, and a discussion forum. The home study plan is supported by the structure of the unit: there are five modules that are presented one per day during each of the holiday intensives. An online tutorial task is assigned to each module.

DATES OF INTENSIVES

EASTER INTENSIVE:

Wednesday 11th April to Sunday 15th April 2012

SPRING INTENSIVE:

Tuesday 2nd October to Saturday 6th October 2012

ENROLMENT DETAILS

F: +61 2 6201 2263

The enrolment procedure includes two steps: firstly a provisional enrolment and secondly a full registration that includes the upfront payment of fees when the minimum number of participants in the course is reached.

ARTICULATION INTO POSTGRADUATE and MASTERS COURSES

It is possible to articulate the Professional Learning in Steiner Education short courses into a Graduate Certificate and/or a Masters course. Each of the short courses will be equivalent to a unit of postgraduate study (worth three credit points respectively).  An application for RPL (recognition of prior learning) will need to be submitted and will involve the completion of a major assignment per short course. There is a wide range of units available in the Masters courses. For further information see the University of Canberra web pages:

http://www.canberra.edu.au/faculties/education/teacher-ed/postgraduate-courses/online-or-blended-courses

WORKLOAD

The amount of time spent on the home study plan depends on prior knowledge, skills and learning style. For those wishing to use the short courses as articulation into a postgraduate or Masters Course, the tutorial tasks and online discussions are designed as preparation for the major assessment item which they will need to complete as part of their application for RPL. As a guide the notional total for a 3 credit point unit over a 14 week semester is assumed to be 150 hours or an average of 10 hours per week. However as this calculation includes weekly time spent in class, the class hours accumulated during the intensive can be deducted reducing the total to about 7 or 8 hours a week.
