Module 3 – Understanding children with additional needs

Autism is a growing problem in our times, some people have described it as an epidemic.  First described almost 80 years ago, now almost 1 in every 100 children are thought to be on the `autism spectrum’.  Causes are reported to be diverse, with no clear single cause known.

We meet children on the Autism Spectrum (ASD) and with Hyperactivity Syndrome (ADHD) in every class in our schools, in ever greater numbers and teachers are struggling to cope with these children.  One quarter to one third of children in every class have some learning challenges and many of these are children with undiagnosed ASD.  Parents are also struggling to meet their needs, therefore understanding and meeting these children is one of the great challenges of our time.

In this course we will look at these conditions from a holistic and Anthroposophic perspective.  We will try to understand the condition and needs of these children and how we can meet these needs at school and at home.

Course Delivery:

Lectures and discussions, case study, practical exercises.

Artistic Activities: painting, singing and music.

Lecturers:

– Barbara Baldwin: MSPA; B.Sc. Speech Pathology; Dip Special Education; Dip Chirophonetic Therapy is a speech pathologist and special educator of international standing. She has worked with people with disabilities of all ages, in many countries and different settings, which include residential care, education and vocational training. Barbara is currently based in Adelaide, South Australia and travels extensively, lecturing on language and learning, child development and different learning styles, needs and abilities.

–  Paul Lawrence: Paul has taught music in Waldorf Schools for 23 years. He has helped to set up music programmes at West Coast Steiner School, Silver Tree Steiner School and Perth Waldorf School in Western Australia. Paul has composed many songs, recently published a songbook “Songs of the South West”, and has trained adults in music and anthroposophy since 2007 at Rudolf Steiner College, Perth, and more recently in Indonesia. He has taught and performed at National Anthroposophical Conferences and Intensives. He recently moved to Bali, Indonesia, with his wife, Nicole, where he consults and mentors for Waldorf Schools and Kindergartens.

– Anupan Pluckpankhajee: Artist and Painting therapist  in a path of Light Colour and Darkness certified by Sienna Academy.  He was trained Anthroposophic Art Therapy in Stuttgart, Germany. His outstanding clinical experienced as art therapist in Children Hospital and Private psychiatric hospital in Bangkok for more than 10 years. He has written many art books and painting, as well as his own art exhibitions. He has his own teaching courses (Inner Art), the seasonal school of Transitional Artistic for teenagers and art therapy studio at 7Arts Inner Place in Chiangmai Thailand.

Time:

The course is divided into 9 distinct modules, with two modules scheduled for April and October each year. Each Module will consist of ten study days spread over two weeks.
