Kindergarten Teacher (Release teacher)

Milkwood Steiner School

Contract: 0.6 until end of 2024 or 2025 (applicant’s preference)

The contract offered is a maximum term contract commencing ASAP, until the end of the 2024 school year. Applicants wishing for a contract that extends into 2025, or includes additional hours to those advertised are encouraged to note this on their cover letter.

Closing Date: 9am Monday 20 May, 2024

Milkwood Steiner School is situated on Larrakia land (Darwin) in the tropical north of Australia, delivering a Steiner Curriculum to 170 students from Kindergarten to Class 8. Our school has unique large tropical style buildings with classrooms that open out on to broad verandas, with a playground that extends to a beautiful native bushland.

We are a thriving, growing school with a welcoming community and children from diverse cultural backgrounds. Our College of Teachers are committed to applying the richness of a Steiner Education to the unique cultural and environmental context of Australia’s Top End. We are seeking a colleague who has a strong desire to grow our school with us.

Milkwood teachers are supported by highly experienced teacher assistants and a rich release/specialist subject program. A Learning Enrichment teacher supports teachers, classes and individual students with diverse learning needs as needed.

In 2024, Milkwood has 2 Kindergarten classes in a beautiful, home-like environment with a Steiner, play-based program for children in the years they turn 5 and 6 years old. The teacher is supported by Teacher Assistant, and also works closely with Indigenous Elders, Families, Principal and the College of Teachers, to integrate Indigenous Knowledge across the Kindergarten curriculum. Both our Kindergartens are already taught by outstanding and committed Steiner Early Childhood Teachers and supported by wonderful Teacher Assistants. This role advertised covers the release time for both Kindergartens by placing the successful applicant in each of the two classes for 1.5 days. The 0.6FTE loading may be timetabled in consultation with the successful applicant according to your preference, provided that one of these days is a Friday. This role is an important, contact role with minimal planning/reporting/assessment required, as this is primarily the responsibility of the existing Kindergarten teachers. The position advertised functions by following the planning and direction of the Kindergarten teacher, and bringing their care and love for children into their work.

Applicant seeking additional hours of regular work at Milkwood may be offered other class teaching roles to support other class teachers to have release time; applicants are encouraged to note their ideal number of days’ work on their application for consideration!

Applicants who do not meet the Steiner Teaching qualification requirement, but have a willingness to engage in Steiner Teacher Training are strongly encouraged to apply, and will be provided with support and mentoring to join our College. Indigenous applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.
