Little Yarra Ensemble 2019 Germany Tour

This year the Little Yarra Ensemble, an extra curricular music ensemble from the Little Yarra Steiner School, travelled to Europe for a two and a half week tour of Germany. The end and highlight of the trip was performing in Berlin as part of the Waldorf 100 celebrations. We had 18 current students from classes 9-12, two alumni students, both graduates from 2018 and a past student. The tour was staffed by our Music teachers, a tour manager and our Principal.

The students worked diligently in the lead up to the tour, attending many after school and weekend rehearsals. It all paid off as they performed with a high level of clarity and professionalism. We had a very busy schedule in our first week, visiting Waldorf schools in Leipzig, Dresden and Hildesheim. At all these schools, we conducted student workshops, school concerts and evening concerts for the community. It can’t be overstated how welcoming the schools were. The reception of these concerts by the host schools was overwhelming. The Ensemble received standing ovations that lasted for minutes. Our students were even unsure of what to do as the applause would continue for such long periods of time!

The second week saw the Waldorf 100 rehearsals and performances. It was an intense period of long rehearsals and lots of waiting around. As you can imagine, preparing these concerts that included hundreds of students from all over the world was a significant logistical challenge for the production crew at the Tempodrom. Our students put in an enormous amount of effort, playing to an exceptionally high standard to a sold out audience of 3500 people and approximately 100,000 watching the live stream worldwide.

We performed Pachelbel’s Canon in the day performance, had a 20 minute set in an outside geodesic dome especially constructed for the event, followed by a 12 minute set in the evening performance which featured purely Australian Composers. It was quite a marathon and we were so proud of how the students performed and held themselves throughout this week. You can view the performances in the links below.

Morning performance: LYE plays Pachelbel’s Canon accompanying class 5-6 performing Eurythmy (Skip through to 19.00 minutes to see the LYSS Performance).

Evening performance LYE play Awakening, 7 Sleepers and Past life Melodies (Skip through to 1 hour 30 minutes for the LYSS performance).

After the performances we had a couple of days’ sightseeing in Berlin followed by a train trip to Frankfurt and a flight home with an overnight stopover in Abu Dhabi. The teachers and students returned quite exhausted and ready for a holiday. A big thank you to the Little Yarra Steiner School and the SEA for supporting this amazing experience. Now, on to planning the next exciting tour!
